UB – UNITE BUFFALO – PAPA EVANS

papa-evansPhotos by Adrian Kraus for ESPN.com

CLICK to watch video: It’s awesome.

Here is an example of Buffalo at it’s finest. I LOVE this clip, for I have had the pleasure of calling one of the great men in this clip my Pops or Papa Evans is what I affectionately refer to him as. Willie Evans still resides in Buffalo and is very involved with the UB Football program. Mom and Pop Evans are the parents of Neal and Alan from one of Buffalo’s favorite bands, Soulive. I remember growing up and being at Al’s house and thinking how cool it was to see my friends dad on his very own collectible Football card from playing a couple of seasons with the Buffalo Bills back in the day.

What I DIDN’T know was the adversity that he had to face being one of only two black players on the UB Bulls in the late 1950’s. You really need to check this out. It really gave me hope in believing that this great city may STILL have some great people of compassion and integrity, after seeing what these guys stood for in the segregated and racist climate in the 60’s. These guys were the only UB team in 102 years of football to win a Bowl Bid. WTF!!?

Thanks to my man Uncle Lee for the heads up. Peace and love to the Evans, MY Fam!!!

MONTREAL GRAFF

One of the MANY walls in Montreal adorned by urban artists, or graff writers. While in Canada I had the great pleasure of meeting a very interesting and creative mind named Steph (not her real name, for confidentiality). Steph showed popped up one evening outside of a club dressed as a human-sized bag of Ranch Dorito chips as if it were a regular outfit. Come to find out, for Steph, it was just that, quite ordinary to be in something funky, strange and unique to her personality. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that Steph is a young lady. Anyhooo…the story behind the Doritos bag dress goes as such. She’s in love with Dorito chips, particularly Ranch flavored. Unfortunately, in Canada, she couldn’t find any Ranch chips within miles. So she called the Lays company, and confessed her love of their brand, and told them about her plight and lo and behold, she soon had more Dorito products than she could handle. Keychains, human-sized plastic bag overcoats, hats, not to mention bags of chips.
Well, the last of the interesting things I learned about Steph was she was a graff writer with a VERY interesting signature tag. See below! Her tag was EVERYWHERE we walked.

A video that some anonymous person posted on YouTube using my song and first single “I Like It.”
Great concept, and the words go right along with most of the visuals. How appropriate to show this NOW that Obama is making his debut in a few months. I Know You Like It!!!!

POPPIN’ IN PETERBOROUGH

peterborough-bldg

A calm and dark evening in Canada in the back of what would soon become my favorite restaurant in Peterborough, Jim’s Pizza and Pasta. It sounds like the average dining experience, but very far from it in fact. The Greek salad and garlic pizza were “top notch,” although I am finding it difficult to explain just what made this meal more memorable than any other pizza and salad…but Tone, Paulie, Prince Po and myself all agreed.

The best moment of the evening was when the waitress, who’s name I can’t remember, asked us what brought us to Peterborough. Paulie told her that we were hip hop artists, and her was response floored us.
Now this woman was about 50 years old or older, pretty attractive white woman, who seemed pretty cool actually, as she talked about her piece of S**t ex-husband as if we were friends for years. Either way, after Paulie said that we were hip hop artists, she responded “Well, I don’t care for RAP music, but I do like HIP HOP!”

We each left the restaurant feeling so empowered that although the current rap/hip hop fans don’t often make the distinction between rap and hip hop, this 50 year old white woman was able to discern the difference. Cheers to Jim’s Pizza and Pasta for the memories!!!
